Postcards: Design Histories From Our Hometowns is a collection of pages and spreads showcasing students’ designs based on research of the design influences in their hometowns.
My contribution features information on my father’s hometown, Santiago, Chile. Through my research, I found few successful existing examples of graphic design within companies, firms, and publications. However, I found a community of talented graphic designers that are unfortunately seeking opportunities outside the country. I also discovered a graphic designer from the mid 1900s whose history seems to have been buried, which may have halted graphic design from flourishing while architecture boomed.

I believe graphic design has the opportunity to grow in Santiago, but contact must be initiated from either the graphic design community or the companies that desperately need them. Graphic design in Chile can benefit greatly from research into its own history to support the future of its sucess.
