The Virtual MLK Experience (vMLK) was a UX design project to organize an exhibition for the 60th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “Fill Up the Jails” speech that occurred in Durham, North Carolina.

I worked with a talented group of four other designers to produce an experience that justly represented a piece of Civil Rights history. We worked in competition with six other teams and were ultimately chosen to have our design utilized for the exhibit in NC State’s James B. Hunt Library.

Because the Virtual MLK Experience took place in several rooms of a library during study hours, so we created transitional signage that was both informative and directed users to exhibit locations.

There were several opporunities to use digital screens to educate and immerse the users. We designed a static screen to introduce the first informational video, Royal Ice Cream Sit-In, and an animated timeline that flipped through notable dates related to MLK’s speech.

Animations

I provided videos as additional transitional materials to further immerse users. The animations use slow movements in reference to Dr. King’s commandng voice and the weight of his words.
