The Virtual MLK Experience (vMLK) was a UX design project to organize an exhibition for the 60th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “Fill Up the Jails” speech that occurred in Durham, North Carolina. This project required thoughtful branding, logical flow, and readable information.
I worked with a talented group of four other designers to produce our branded vMLK Experience. We worked in competition with six other teams and were ultimately chosen to have our design utilized for the exhibit in NC State’s James B. Hunt Library.
Standees
Because the Virtual MLK Experience took place in several rooms of a library during study hours, our team had to some up with signage that would not only directed people to the different pockets of experience, but also would contribute to the exhibit through its design. Our mountain-like motif served as transitional material between exhibits to provide information about the experiences.
There were several opporunities to use digital screens to educate and immerse the users. My group designed a static screen to introduce the first history lesson video, Royal Ice Cream Sit-In, and an animated timeline that flipped through important events for the last history lesson.
Screens
James B. Hunt Library has a divided digital screen and so my team designed a graphic poster with an image of the Baptist Church where Dr. King spoke as its centerpiece.
Animations
I provided additional transitional designs to enhance the user experience of visitors; two motion graphics. Through simple animations, I managed to construct graphics that moved with weight to mimic Dr. King’s fortitude and benevolence.
